During seasonal transitions, many of us feel that everyone around us is either
sick or experiencing low energy. For pregnant women, whose immune
systems go through significant changes, this feeling can be especially
pronounced. During pregnancy, the body carefully balances between
maintaining a healthy immune response and partially suppressing immune
activity- allowing the body to accept and nurture the developing baby.
However, because some immune cells function in a “softer” way, pregnant
women can be more susceptible to certain infections, like seasonal flu and
viral illnesses. Simple daily actions can help strengthen your immune system,
supporting both your health and your baby’s.
How can you support your immune system during seasonal transitions? Here
are a few useful tips:
1- Daily Movement-
Gentle movement that engages the whole body improves blood flow and
breath. Try incorporating simple movements that mobilize all joints and reach
all the body’s extremities (from toes to fingertips and head). Chest-opening
exercises are especially helpful for enhancing breath and maintaining a sense
of vitality.
2- Stress Reduction-
Elevated stress levels can weaken the immune
system. Try reducing exposure to stress triggers like screens, news, and
social media, and consider practicing mindful breathing with an emphasis on
lengthening the exhale. Calming poses like forward bends and Child’s Pose
can help ease physical and mental tension, while meditation practice is a
wonderful way to nurture inner balance.
3- Light, Clean Nutrition-
Try choosing natural, minimally processed foods, and favor gently cooked
vegetables and fruits. Reducing sugar intake is also helpful- high blood sugar
levels may weaken immune cell function.
4- Time in Nature-
A brief walk in nature (try it also barefoot!) can relax the body, increase
circulation, and renew your energy.
5- Sunlight Exposure-
Sunlight helps the body produce vitamin D, which is known to support
immune function. Take advantage of bright days to spend some quality time
outdoors, energizing and supporting your well-being.
In my yoga sessions, we focus on breathing
techniques, poses, and meditation practices that will help you strengthen
natural resilience and feel balanced and healthy.
